A GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY TEENAGERS have been celebrating qualifications and a range of business skills gained through work placements preparing them for careers in retail. The RETAIL GOLD initiative offers a series of placements for participating students in order to train in developing frontline skills, such as customer care, sales and communication, together with the wider aspects of retailing. Retail can be fast moving, fun, high-achieving and provide a satisfying career, but that is not always the perception in schools. Developments in the curriculum have opened up an educational route in to the sector so that schools and students have a much clearer understanding of career opportunities, benefits and skills. Students from St Robert of Newminster RC School in Washington and Gosforth Academy (formerly Gosforth High School) have attended extended work placements in retail outlets providing them with the opportunity to learn in context and give real meaning to their Btec studies in school. Students attended a ceremony at The Mansion House in Newcastle to mark their achievements with a series of awards and gave presentations about their work experience placements to an audience of proud parents and classmates. The donation follows the charity being nominated by Eldon Square to receive an award from the CSC's Chairman's Prize, which invited shopping centres within the CSC group to identify local charities in need of support. Joan Taylor, Eldon Square's Marketing Manager, said: "Eldon Square and Cash for Kids have worked together on many projects over recent years, including ‘Family Charity Challenge' a massive fundraising campaign to give a much-deserving family the holiday of a lifetime, and ‘Christmas Wishes' a promotion which resulted in another family enjoying the delights of Lapland during the festive season. In addition, over the Christmas period, we have been the drop-off point for Cash for Kid's ‘Secret Santa' appeal, and collected many gifts which will go to disadvantaged children."
